Author’s Note
This presentation represents another step in an ongoing enquiry into the relationship between consciousness, natural law, human development, and the conditions through which individuals and societies evolve.
Although delivered within the context of a conference on complexity science, the questions explored here extend beyond any single discipline. They concern how we understand intelligence and organisation in living systems, what we mean by healing, and how different traditions of knowledge might contribute to a more integrated understanding of human experience.
I am particularly interested in the possibilities that emerge when scientific investigation, contemplative experience, and philosophical enquiry are brought into thoughtful conversation—not as interchangeable forms of evidence, but as complementary approaches that may illuminate different dimensions of the same questions.
I share this recording in that spirit, with appreciation for my fellow symposium participants and the opportunity to continue these explorations with readers of On Transcendence.

What happens when a living system heals? What enables it to reorganise, adapt, and restore functioning, often without our conscious direction?
On 14 October 2026, I had the pleasure of presenting at the Conference on Complex Systems 2026 as part of the symposium Complexity, Asian Medicine, and the Intelligence of Healing.
Beginning with a simple experience involving an injury sustained by one of our sons, I explored the relationship between complexity science, consciousness, self-organisation, and the conditions that support healing.
The presentation also introduces two frameworks I have been developing: the Seven Layers of Manifestation, which examines relationships among consciousness, natural law, human experience, and the worlds we create; and Adaptive Elegance, which explores our capacity to navigate change with increasing flexibility, coherence, and effectiveness.
Throughout the talk, I consider how different approaches to knowledge might contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of living systems, while recognising the distinctions between philosophical propositions, subjective experience, and empirical scientific evidence.
The presentation concludes with a discussion concerning consciousness, human potential, and the social systems we collectively create.
I share this recording as a continuation of the enquiries explored throughout On Transcendence, particularly those concerning consciousness, human development, and the relationship between our inner experience and the worlds we participate in creating.
And as always, I welcome your reflections and look forward to continuing the conversation.
